Spy

Spy is not without some minimal technical story problems…small character parts get kind of jumbled, but easily forgivable, as it all comes together instead of apart by the end. Not enough movies stick the landing. This one does, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t laugh my ass off the entire way to the end of the credits. The best part is that it features a woman who hollywood tradition would cast as a goofy, clumsy “accidental heroine” who stumbles into victory, only-reflecting something closer to reality- here she’s actually capable and strong and frankly, funny as hell. Not because she IS the joke, but because she’s everything you’d expect Jason Statham or Jude Law to be in a movie like this:charming and lethal. Speaking of the boys, Statham is wonderfully dialed up to peak Stathamness here. Wild and unhinged and searingly funny. Jude Law never gets the respect he deserves and this proves he could kill as Bond(and, it’s pretty weird to hear him speak American English instead of the King’s…he’s just so obviously British). Simply put, every imperfect part of this thing pulls together to form a wonderful whole and becomes an unmitigated joy to watch. If you like laughing, check it out.

Joshua has been an avid fan of movies since he first saw Indiana Jones escape that rolling boulder and resoundingly punch Nazis to death. Forever wrestling with the notion of "why" in movies, he believes there is such a thing as "A Perfect Film."
